Method
The browser uses locale-aware Unicode segmentation for words and sentences. Characters are user-visible graphemes, so a combined accent or family emoji counts as one; the non-space count excludes whitespace. Each non-empty line counts as a paragraph. Reading and speaking estimates use 220 and 130 words per minute, rounded up.
Worked example
‘Hello, world.’ is 2 words, 13 visible characters, 12 without spaces, one sentence and one paragraph. A 660-word draft is about 3 minutes to read or 6 to speak.
Limits to know
Hyphenated terms, abbreviations and sentence endings can vary by browser and language. A line break creates another paragraph; reading and speaking rates are only planning estimates. The optional word goal stays in this browser session.
