Method

Words and sentences are segmented with the browser's locale-aware Unicode rules. Characters, non-space characters and paragraphs are counted separately; reading time uses 220 words per minute and speaking time 130.

Worked example

A 660-word draft is estimated at 3 minutes to read and 6 minutes to speak after rounding each estimate up to a whole minute.

Limits to know

Hyphenated terms, abbreviations and sentence endings can be interpreted differently by language. Reading and speaking times are planning estimates, not a measure of an individual reader.
